The outbreak of the coronavirus has already brought the sporting world to a grinding halt. And with uncertainties surrounding the containment and conclusion of this pandemic, the growing concern that football season could be in jeopardy only mounts.
ESPN college football analyst, Kirk Herbstreit has finally placed a voice to that concern, stating at this point he'd be "shocked" if there were an NFL or college football season.
As reported by TMZsports.com, Herbstreit was on ESPN radio Thursday evening and said the following:

"I'll be shocked if we have NFL football this fall, if we have college football. I'll be so surprised if that happens. Just because from what I understand, people that I listen to, you're 12 to 18 months from a [coronavirus] vaccine. I don't know how you let these guys go into locker rooms and let stadiums be filled up and how you can play ball. I just don't know how you can do it with the optics of it."
Some would lob the idea of playing these games this fall inside of empty stadiums. To which I would say, you're still looking at a football staff and roster at the college level that consists of upwards of 150 individuals.
Then's there the obvious example the NBA saw with its league. What happens if a player on Georgia tests positive, leading to a string of positives on the roster? You can't just shut that one program down and continue to have other schools playing.
The word unprecedented is often overused in situations like this. But that's exactly what it is. Something we haven't seen before, and something the sporting world is drastically unprepared for.
